Apatite is named for the Greek word apate, which means to deceive or be misleading, because Apatite is similar in appearance to many other minerals. Apatite describes a group of similar isomorphous hexagonal phosphate minerals. It is also the index mineral for a hardness of 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Because it is only a 5 and it is brittle it is best used in jewelry where its beauty can be appreciated and not knocked about.
